Before his conversion to the Catholic Church in 1845, he was a prominent figure in Anglicanism, particularly for his involvement in the Oxford Movement and his influential short writings ( tracts ) on theological, historical, cultural, and liturgical matters. His admission to Catholicism therefore had far-reaching repercussions. Cardinal Newman distinguished himself as a theologian, Church historian, and moral theologian, as well as an apologist and novelist. He was the first Rector of the Catholic University of Ireland (1854-1858), now University College Dublin.
