From June 10 to 14, 2025, the Paris Conference on Education took place at the International Conference Center of the Sorbonne University, an academic meeting that brought together researchers and education professionals to discuss pedagogical innovations and global challenges in university education.
Cristina Carriego, representing co-authors Julieta Laudadío, Claudia Vanney and the Universidad Austral, presented at Sorbonne University two posters on the development of intellectual character in higher education, within the framework of the institutional project aimed at promoting the development of intellectual virtues in students and strengthening teacher training.
The first poster, " The Development of Intellectual Character at University: From Training to Planning ," presented the work process being carried out by twelve faculty teams organized by academic program. This work is part of a five-year institutional plan initiated in 2022, based on the theory of intellectual character and models of professional faculty development. Between 2023 and 2024, the teams reviewed 24 curricula and 227 course syllabi, identifying the priority intellectual virtues for each professional profile, the most appropriate subjects for teaching them, and the educational opportunities for integrating them into teaching practice. More than 130 professors participated in this phase, which will continue in 2025 with the redesign of courses focused on the explicit teaching of a selected intellectual virtue.
The second poster, "Teachers' Literacy on Intellectual Virtues and Their Contributions to University Teaching ," presented a qualitative study based on a teacher training seminar held in 2023, with the participation of 134 professors from 24 different academic programs. Analysis of the discussions in the online forums identified four key themes: the impact of inspiring teachers on their own academic trajectories, the conception of teaching as a service to the common good, the challenges arising from changes in students and technologies, and the need for strategies to spark student curiosity and engagement.
Participation in the conference allowed us to share our experience in an international forum. Universidad Austral in the integration of intellectual character into university teaching, highlighting concrete advances and a working model that is beginning to attract the interest of other institutions.
