Dr. Ignacio Silva, a researcher at the Institute, was invited to participate in a consultation at the University of Oxford, an event organized jointly by the SCIO (Scholarship and Christianity in Oxford) center, associated with Wycliffe Hall, and the Protestant Theological University, Groningen, Netherlands. The event, funded by the Templeton Religion Trust, took place at St. Hugh's College from April 29 to May 1, 2019, and was attended by approximately twenty academics from Southeast Asia (Sri Lanka), Africa (Kenya), Europe (United Kingdom, Portugal, and the Netherlands), and the Americas (United States and Argentina). Among the most prominent participants were Professors Alister McGrath and John H. Brooke, the current and first Andreas Idreos Professors of Science and Religion at the University of Oxford.
The event aimed to foster discussion about the notions of universality and catholicity within the framework of the dialogue between science and faith, considering diverse geographical and cultural contexts. These discussions encompassed academic, popular, and indigenous perspectives, striving for a more comprehensive understanding of the relationship between science and faith than is typically offered in mainstream discourse.
Dr. Ignacio Silva gave two presentations: the first on the past, present and future problems of the dialogue between science and theology in Latin America; while the second was about the notion of catholicity within the theology of the Roman Catholic Church in the framework of the dialogue between science and faith.
