On October 21, the School of Education of the Universidad Austral, Along the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), held a key meeting to reflect on how the artificial intelligence (AI) can become a concrete pedagogical tool to improve learning in literacy and mathematics, two critical areas in Argentine education.
In Latin America and the Caribbean, the PISA 2022 results show that the region ranks in the bottom half of the global rankings in Mathematics, Reading, and Science. In Argentina, social and territorial inequalities , difficulties in reading comprehension and mathematics, school dropout rates, and over-age students highlight an urgent challenge.
In this context, AI emerges as an ally with enormous potential to personalize teaching , offer real-time feedback and anticipate difficulties , always mediated by the teacher's role and guided by principles of ethics and equity.
La institutional opening was in charge of Carlos Torrendell, Secretary of Education of the Nation; Viviana Alva Hart, representative of BID in Argentina; and Julian Rodriguez, rector of the Universidad AustralIn their speeches, they highlighted the value of collaborative work between the public sector, academia, and international organizations to build educational policies that integrate innovation, evidence and educational justice.
La central conference was in charge of Justin Reich, researcher, teacher and director of MIT Teaching Systems Lab, interviewed by the Dr. Santiago Bellomo, dean of the school of education.
Reich, international reference in Educational innovation and digital learningHe invited us to think of artificial intelligence as an opportunity to teach better, learn better and reduce inequalities.
In addition, the meeting included thematic panels that presented regional experiences, government proposals, and evidence on the impact of AI, teacher training, and the sustainability of public policies. Participants included representatives from the World Bank , IDB , OEI , UNESCO , UNICEF , Argentine and international universities, and provincial ministries of education.
The event reaffirmed the commitment of the Universidad Austral with the promotion of evidence-based education, innovation, and equity.
Because when technology is put at the service of learning, education becomes truly transformative.
