Author: PhD in Engineering

Fernando Sanchez Sarmiento successfully defended his doctoral thesis with honors and received recognition for his outstanding performance. He thus became the second PhD from the Faculty of Engineering.

His industry-oriented research project was titled “Systematic Characterization of Heat Transfer Associated with Heat Treatments.” The new PhD in Engineering explains that he developed a method to solve heat transfer problems and, through this method, was able to answer some theoretical questions that allow for a deeper understanding of the nature of these problems.

Throughout his work, Fernando raised a topic with high applicability to industry, an aspect that strengthens the Faculty of Engineering's strategic project. Following the publicity given to his thesis defense, the possibility arose of carrying out [a project/initiative/etc.] from the Universidad Austral a transfer, applying these developments to solid waste recovery processes related to oil activity.

Heat treatments are part of many industrial processes, particularly metallurgical ones. Their numerical modeling requires the characterization of thermal properties. “This thesis provides a novel and interesting systematic methodology for solving heat treatment problems,” stated Dr. Gabriela Robiolo , Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and director of the doctoral program.

The jury members, Angel Menendez , Patricio Mendez and Victor Angel Herrero, highlighted the effort of carrying out his doctoral work in parallel with his professional and teaching activity, while also being in charge of a family, which led him to obtain the highest grade.

Through his work, Fernando has developed international contacts with researchers from Brazil, Mexico, the United States, and Canada, providing him with a wealth of experimental data to validate his thesis results and open new lines of research to further his research career. Dr. Miguel Ángel Cavaliere , Academic Secretary, Vice-Director of the Doctoral Program in Engineering, and his doctoral thesis advisor, highlights his critical thinking and creativity.

For his part, Fernando highlighted from his experience: “Doing a doctoral thesis is never easy, but at the Faculty of Engineering I always found a good willingness to solve the problems that arose.”
