For the fourth consecutive year, the British Times Higher Education (THE) Latin America University Rankings 2026 recognizes the Universidad Austral as the first privately managed university in ArgentinaA pioneer in sustained participation in international rankings, The university consolidates its regional leadership in a key edition for higher education in Latin America..

In a particularly challenging context for the Argentine university system, the ranking results reflect a scenario of sharp declines at the top of the table, driven mainly by the methodological changes introduced this year by THE. Even so, la Universidad Austral It maintains its position as a national benchmark in the private sector and is one of the three Argentine institutions within the regional top 100..

“It is a joy to share, for the fourth consecutive year, the recognition of the Universidad Austral as the highest-ranked private university in Argentina in THE Latin America University Rankings 2026. This achievement, in a year made especially challenging by the ranking's methodological changes, reaffirms our commitment to academic excellence, research, and holistic education. It motivates us to redouble our efforts to continue contributing to the country's development and the personal and professional growth of our entire university community.”, states the rector of the Universidad AustralJulian Rodriguez.

Argentina has only three universities in the top 100 this year —compared to eight the previous year— and none in the top 50. According to the new edition of the ranking, the best-positioned Argentine institutions are the National University of La Plata (shared 62nd place), the Universidad Austral (position 82) and the National University of San Martín (shared 89th place).

A methodological change that impacts the region

For the first time since its creation, the Latin American ranking adopted the global methodology used by the World University Rankings by THE. Until 2024, Latin American institutions were evaluated only in comparison with their regional peers. This year, the evaluation was conducted on a global basis, applying the same criteria to universities worldwide.

This change resulted in significant drops in scores and positions for numerous institutions in the region, including those in Argentina, so THE recommends caution when comparing the results with those of previous editions.

“The Times index shows much greater volatility in this edition. According to the agency, the methodology applied this year was particularly demanding and affected numerous institutions in the country. Even so, the Universidad Austral It managed to maintain a prominent position among the region's privately managed institutions, which reaffirms the strength of its academic project.”, concludes Julio Durand, director of the Institutional Reputation Unit of the Universidad Austral.
