Electricity rates: inflation, climate change and the withdrawal of subsidies raise their cost in Latin America

Latin America is currently experiencing a landscape marked by dilemmas related to energy use. The rise to power of progressive governments in the region has fueled the debate surrounding the use of renewable energy sources, at the expense of traditional ones. While countries like Chile and Colombia have focused their efforts on the production of green hydrogen and other alternative energy sources, the reality is that electricity rates are still far from being stable and affordable for everyone. Rising inflation, commodity prices, and even potential natural disasters affect the cost of this essential public service for Latin American families. It is also important to remember that some countries have traditionally relied on subsidies to varying degrees.
