Biases and ethics in artificial intelligence

Author: Gabriela Garcia Taboada

Ignacio del Carril, researcher and philosopher of the Universidad Austral and a member of the Quo Vadis IA research team was invited to participate with his reflections in this article published in the newspaper La Nación.

Here he emphasizes that artificial intelligences are not neutral or impartial because they are made by humans and, therefore, carry the biases of their creators and the data with which they are trained.

For him, this lack of neutrality becomes especially worrying when these systems are used to make decisions that affect real people — for example, in health or finance — as they can reflect hierarchies of value between human lives and generate profound injustices.

Ignacio also points out that the values of a model—and its biases—can be transferred to users, and that AI cannot be expected to be morally responsible: that responsibility lies with the people who design and regulate it.
