What does it mean to be a judge of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights? How are decisions made that set precedents for the entire region? In this lecture, Dr. Alberto Borea Odría will share his firsthand experience from the continent's most important international human rights court.

An intimate look at the workings of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights: the legal challenges, the weight of each ruling, and the role this court plays in defending democracy and fundamental rights in Latin America.

The conference offers a unique opportunity to learn firsthand how the Inter-American Human Rights System operates and the concrete impact of its decisions on member states. It provides a space for reflection and dialogue on justice, democracy and protection of rights In the continent.

Dr. Alberto Borea Odría

Judge of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights

Peruvian constitutional lawyer, graduate of the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru with postgraduate studies in the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Complutense University of MadridElected judge of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights for the period 2025–2030 by the 54th General Assembly of the OAS. He was a deputy and senator for Lima, Permanent Representative of Peru to the OAS, and president of the Permanent Council and of the Committee on Juridical and Political Affairs of that organization. He is the author of more than twelve books on constitutional law and political theory, including Constitution Manual y The difficult democracy in Latin AmericaProfessor Emeritus of the Catholic University of Santa María and Doctor Honoris Causa from that university.
