An unprecedented alliance between journalists, academics, prosecutors, and representatives from international organizations is driving the launch of a new research program that aims to analyze and prevent the rise of all crimes committed in digital environments. The seven-part series is a co-production between the Cybercrime Observatory of the Universidad Austral and DNEWS.
In a context marked by the sustained growth of digital crimes in Latin America, the Latin American news channel DNEWS presents “Online Crimes”, a new investigative journalism program aimed at analyzing and raising awareness about the real impact of cybercrime on people's daily lives.
The initiative arises from an unprecedented collaboration between journalism, academia, the judicial system, and international organizations, with the aim of highlighting phenomena such as cyberattacks, grooming, the sexual exploitation of children and adolescents, and online piracy—crimes that are advancing on a regional and transnational scale and that demand coordinated and multidisciplinary responses.

The new season will premiere next Wednesday, April 29, at 23:30 p.m., on the DNEWS screen, present on channels 700 and 1700 (HD) of the DIRECTV satellite television service, and on its streaming and live TV platform DGO.
“Online Crimes” was formed through an alliance between DNEWS and the Law School of the Universidad Austral, headed by its dean, Gabriel M. Astarloa, and with Daniela Dupuy, prosecutor specializing in cybercrime in the City of Buenos Aires, director of the Observatory of Cybercrime and Digital Evidence in Criminal Investigations (OCEDIC).
Academic and judicial participation brings technical rigor, experience in criminal investigation, and a specialized perspective to address complex crimes that require legal knowledge and institutional commitment.

“At the Faculty of Law, we want to serve society through the expertise and research work that our faculty carries out every day. In this sense, the prevention and outreach work done by our Cybercrime Observatory will now be strengthened by the national and regional reach of such a powerful signal as DNEWS. We are committed to raising awareness among more and more people about the current risks they and those around them face in the digital world,” he stated. Gabriel M. Astarloa, dean of the Faculty of Law of the Universidad Austral.
Daniela Dupuy, The presenter of “Online Crimes” highlighted the program’s preventative role and the importance of raising social awareness: “What we aim for with this series is to sensitize and educate the entire society about the current risks of cybercrime in all its forms, to prevent these situations from reaching the criminal justice system. Prevention is key, because the emotional and financial damage suffered by victims—of all ages—is often irreversible. I appreciate DNEWS’ trust and support in promoting a cause that involves us all.”
“The internet is no longer a parallel space: it is a central part of our daily lives. Therefore, the crimes committed there are not virtual, they are real,” stated Marcelo Salomone, director of DNEWS, who emphasized the role of journalism as a fundamental tool for explaining these phenomena, providing context, and contributing to greater social awareness.
Online Crimes It is born from the conviction that only through rigorous information, institutional cooperation and social commitment is it possible to face a growing threat that undermines the dignity, mental health and freedom of people.
