  • If the doctoral thesis topic is complex and requires in-depth multidisciplinary analysis, there may be up to two thesis supervisors acting as co-supervisors. At least one of them must belong to the Universidad Austral.

ADMISSION OF THE THESIS FOR DEFENSE

ADMISSION OF THE THESIS FOR DEFENSE

The dissertation will be submitted to the Director of the Doctoral Program for admission to defense. The final report from the Dissertation Director authorizing its presentation for defense must be attached.

APPOINTMENT OF THE THESIS JURY

The FCB Governing Board, upon proposal from the Academic Council, will appoint the professors or researchers to serve on the jury that will evaluate the submitted thesis. The jury will be composed of a majority of members external to the program, with at least one member being external to the institution. A Chair and a Secretary will be elected from among them. The jury will consist of three (3) full members and two (2) alternate members.

INDIVIDUAL JURY OPINION (PRIOR TO THE ORAL DEFENSE OF THE THESIS)

Each member of the Thesis Committee must issue a reasoned, individual, and written opinion on the thesis work, analyzing: the methodology used, the relevance of the topic, the originality of the approach, the depth and quality of the work produced, and the logical rigor of its development. They must also expressly indicate whether or not they approve it for oral defense. Any opinion lacking sufficient reasoning will be rejected by the Doctoral Program Office and returned to the respective committee member for proper processing. If, on this second occasion, an opinion lacking sufficient reasoning is again issued, it will be rejected, and that committee member's appointment will be revoked. Another member will be appointed to replace them from among the designated alternate committee members.

The jury members will have thirty days to issue their decision, which may be extended for a further fifteen days. After this period, the thesis copy will be requested back from any member who has not issued their decision, and their appointment will be nullified. A new member will then be appointed to replace them from among the alternate members. The new jury member will have the same thirty-day period, extendable for another fifteen days, to issue their decision.

FINAL DECISION ON ADMISSION TO DEFENSE

When the written dissertation is accepted for defense by a majority of the members of the Jury, the Director of the Doctoral Program will issue the final decision, setting a date for the doctoral candidate to defend their dissertation orally. This date will not exceed sixty days from the date the final decision of admission to defense is issued.

REJECTION OF THE DEFENSE APPLICATION

If a majority of the jury members do not approve the written dissertation, the Director of the Doctoral Program will issue a final decision denying the application for admission to defense. The doctoral candidate may revise their dissertation and resubmit it after a period of no more than one year. The revised dissertation must be re-examined by the members of the examination committee, who will issue a decision. If the dissertation is again rejected by a majority of the committee members, the doctoral candidate may not resubmit the same topic.

ORAL AND PUBLIC DEFENSE

The thesis defense will be an oral and public event. This doctoral thesis defense will take place in a public session with the Thesis Director present and will begin with the doctoral candidate presenting the work carried out and the conclusions reached, making special mention of the original contributions.

THESIS EVALUATION

The members of the jury, beginning with the secretary and ending with the chair, will express their opinion of the presented thesis and may raise any questions and objections they deem appropriate. Likewise, the thesis supervisor or any of the professors present may raise questions and objections. The doctoral candidate must respond to the remarks of the jury members and the other professors. The chair of the jury is responsible for managing all matters related to the proceedings of the session.

DEFENSE CONCLUSIONS. GRADE

Following the public defense of the thesis, the examining board, in a closed session, will award the grade of "not acceptable," "pass," "good," "very good," "distinguished," or "outstanding." This distinction will be included on the doctoral degree certificate.

TITLE AND DIPLOMA

Those who successfully complete their dissertation according to the regulations established herein will be awarded the degree and title of "Doctor of Biomedical Sciences." OPHTHALMOLOGY

Translational Research (translational research) Clinical application can be defined as an interactive and bidirectional process between the laboratory and the clinic. The clinical application of a laboratory discovery often takes a long time. It is a very slow process. The main reason for this slowness is that basic researchers and clinicians do not speak the same language, and to communicate effectively they need a translator. This is the role of the clinical scientist. (clinical scientist), who becomes a key intermediary.

However, becoming a clinical scientist is not easy, as it requires suitable educational and working conditions. In Argentina, this situation led us to explore the possibility of establishing a joint program between the Residency and Doctoral programs in Ophthalmology, with the aim of providing ophthalmologists with specialized scientific training and the ability to communicate effectively with basic and clinical researchers. Similar post-residency programs have been developed in the United States.

After much analysis, our program was jointly created and launched by two institutions, the Faculty of Biomedical Sciences of the Universidad Austral (Head of the Doctoral Program) and the Argentine Ophthalmological Foundation “Jorge Malbran” (Head of the Medical Residency Program). Some of the biggest concerns were the simultaneous acquisition of clinical skills and scientific methodology; the time needed to achieve objectives and the accumulation of stress and fatigue, among others.

Mentorship from a clinical scientist specializing in vision was considered crucial. The educational initiative was deemed risky; however, the Medical Education Committee ultimately approved it as a pilot program. Given the positive experience of the first few years, it was considered feasible to launch a similar program in Internal Medicine.

For more information about the program, you can read the recently published article on the subject. Combined residency and doctoral program in ophthalmology: a tool for the education of clinical scientists. Gallo JE, Olivieri C, Croxatto JO. Clin Experiment Ophthalmol. 2009;37(4):420-2.

INTERNAL MEDICINE

After observing the positive experience of the Ophthalmology residency-doctoral program, we decided to start a similar program in Internal Medicine Residency and Doctorate.

This program has led to the successful completion of the first doctoral thesis, carried out by Dr. Miguel Manglio Rizzo (currently, head of the Oncology Service at the Austral University Hospital), under the direction of Dr. Guillermo Mazzolini, current dean of the Faculty of Biomedical Sciences (FCB), and carried out by the FCB of the Universidad Austral (responsible for the Doctorate) and the Austral University Hospital (responsible for the Medical Residency).
