In Praise of Supplication

Academic/Unit: Carlos Álvarez Teijeiro.

“We men have forgotten what it is to celebrate,” Adorno stated with a sad melancholy, but—contrary to all expectations—supplication teaches us how to do it again. Indeed, we have forgotten the ancient and deeply human custom of supplication. Or worse still: we believe that supplication is merely kneeling in humiliation amidst the wounds of defeat, the last resort when all else has failed, and we believe it will continue to do so, irredeemably. But supplication is not that, not at all, for it is not born of despair: it is born of wonder.
