Fernando Ruiz: new member of the National Academy of Journalism

LA NATIONAL ACADEMY OF JOURNALISM OF THE ARGENTINE REPUBLIC The association celebrated the awarding of diplomas to its new members. Among those named was Professor Fernando Ruiz. WHICH HE HAS HELD SINCE 2019 THE CHAIR OF JOSÉ MANUEL ESTRADA, BY DECISION OF THE PLENARY OF ITS MEMBERS.

Professor of Journalism and Democracy at the Faculty of Communication of the Universidad Austral and former president of Argentine Journalism Forum (2019-2021), was incorporated into the prestigious group of journalists, now led by Joaquín Morales Solto.

His words, upon arriving at the podium: "I would love to be able to place our work, from now on, within the tradition of Argentine journalism. Which is a tradition with different confluences, a chaotic convergence."

And he added, diploma in hand: “We have to think about the future, not the past. The best future is created when traditions can be woven together with new ideas.” Weave, weave. Unite.

We congratulate Fernando Ruiz and the 14 professionals who were appointed along with him: Beatriz Sarlo, María O'Donnell, Hinde Pomeraniec, Santo Biasatti, Fernando Bravo, Daniel Dessein, Gustavo González, Marcelo Longobardi, Ernesto Tenembaum, Eduardo van der Kooy, Hugo Alconada Mon, Fernán Saguier, Héctor Guyot and Norma Morandini.

Career path

Fernando Ruiz holds a PhD in Communication from the University of Navarra, Spain; a degree in Political Science from the Catholic University of Argentina; is an expert in the relationship between journalism and democracy in Latin America; and is a full-time professor at the Faculty of Communication of the Universidad Austral and its Graduate School of Communication. He is also a founding member of the Argentine Journalism Forum (FOPEA), where he served as vice president and director of Freedom of Expression.

He has written numerous books related to journalism: News Hunters: Two Hundred Years in the Daily Lives of Journalists (Ariel, 2018); Media Wars: The Great Journalistic Battles from the May Revolution to the Present Day (South American, 2014); Words are actions. Political and professional history of the newspaper La Opinión under Jacobo Timerman, 1971 – 1977 (Profile, 2001); Another crack in the wall: report and testimonies from the new Cuban press (La Crujía, 2003); The Lord of the Markets: History of Ámbito Financiero, 1976 – 2001 (The Athenaeum, 2005); Press and Congress Coordinator: network of relationships and social representation (La Crujía, 2001). He has given courses and workshops on the relationship between journalism and democracy in Argentina, Colombia, Ecuador, El Salvador, Uruguay, Panama, Chile, Brazil, Guatemala, Mexico, the United States, the Czech Republic, and Venezuela. He has also been a consultant for media outlets. As a journalist, he has traveled to almost every country in the region. He was Vice Dean and Academic Secretary of the Faculty of Communication at the Universidad Austral.
