For the third consecutive year, the British Times Higher Education (THE) Latin America University Rankings 2024 places the Universidad Austral and Argentina's first privately managed university. A pioneer in participating in international university rankings, the Universidad Austral This year it confirms its leading position in the THE ranking that evaluates the performance of higher education in the Latin American region.
“This has been a difficult year for the university sector, and as a university, we want to express our commitment to offering society the opportunity to access a high-quality university education that stands out in the region, while also contributing to the ongoing recognition of the quality of Argentine universities. The participation of higher education institutions in the Times ranking helps to highlight the educational quality of our country.”hold Mr. Julián Rodríguez, Rector of the Universidad Austral.
“At Austral University, we have set out to cultivate a relationship with all our stakeholders so that they perceive the quality of our educational programs, the quality of our research, the quality of our interaction with society, and our knowledge transfer and outreach efforts; these are all dimensions considered in the rankings compiled by international agencies. These rankings help to align perceived quality with declared quality and contribute to building the reputation and prestige of universities.”Rodríguez adds.
Regarding the institution's position in the ranking, Julio Durand, in charge of the Institutional Reputation Unit of the Universidad AustralHe explains that variations “are quite frequent” during the first few years. “The participation of Argentine universities is still limited, but we hope it will continue to increase, as it did this year. In this sense, our university helps to raise awareness of the world of rankings and to increase the presence of universities from our country. Proportionally, there isn't as much national representation as there is from Brazilian, Mexican, and Colombian universities; and it would seem that the true value of the quality of Argentine universities in the region isn't reflected.”.
Regarding THE ranking
This year, the launch of the Times Higher Education (THE) Latin American University Ranking 2024 was presented in Argentina at the Buenos Aires headquarters of the Universidad AustralThe launch took place at a press conference led by Phil Baty, THE's Director of Global Affairs. The 2024 edition includes 214 institutions in 16 countries, up from 197 in 15 countries last year.
The ranking is based on the same 18 performance indicators that underpin the THE World University Rankings, but the weightings have been recalibrated to reflect the characteristics of universities in the region. Universities are assessed across all their core missions: teaching, research, knowledge transfer, and international outlook.
“It is a good strategy for Argentine universities to join the Latin American ranking and learn more about how the Times works, the different indicators, and to become familiar, above all, with indicators related to scientific production, research quality, and the academic research environment; all aspects in which the Universidad Austral has stood out over the years and has allowed us to position ourselves as one of the best private universities in this ranking.”Durand explains.
La Universidad Austral was chosen by Times Higher Education to host this international forum focused on data-driven institutional development: THE Latin America Data Forum, "Innovating Institutional Performance for an Agile Future", and will take place today, Tuesday, November 12, on our Pilar campus.
Leaders from higher education institutions across Latin America will gather to share knowledge, network, and participate in masterclasses. The forum will focus on exchanging best practices and discussing common challenges related to data management and institutional reporting, assessing the impact of their management on institutional reputation.
The event seeks to generate concrete results that help prepare institutions for the future, ensuring they are equipped to meet the needs of students, staff, and society at large.
“One of our goals is to raise awareness of our proposal not only in Latin America, but also in the Ibero-American region. In that sense, collaborating with the Times on a conference of this kind, which is being held for the first time in Argentina, is an event that has good media and communications coverage, and gives us a good platform to reach the world.”Durand concludes.
