We live in incredibly strange times: never have we been so visible, and simultaneously, never have we been so profoundly hidden. In fact, we live under an imperative ethical regime of invisibility where everything corporeal must be converted into data, every emotional expression into a mere algorithm, and every gesture into an emoji, thereby suppressing that which constitutes the very principle of ethics. Certainly, as Umberto Eco stated, “ethics begins when others appear.” But what happens when others no longer appear, when their real presence has dissolved into screens, when the face has been effectively replaced by its digital simulacrum?
