Subsequently, Dr. Pádraic Conway, director of the International Centre for Newman Studies at University College Dublin, spoke on “The Idea of a University: Newman’s Vision as Founding Rector of University College Dublin.” Conway explained that Newman envisioned a university open to the pursuit of universal knowledge and truth. However, his vision of the universality of knowledge is not typical of the Enlightenment, he clarified. Newman, he argued, draws on an earlier tradition in which knowledge of the universe reveals its Creator. “We, as members of the university community, are participants in a science of learning with ultimate goals and outcomes that transcend us,” he suggested.
