Disability is a dynamic and constantly evolving concept (Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, 2015, Preamble - Paragraph e). Within the framework of the Sustainable Development Goals (UN, 2015), it addresses the interaction between persons with disabilities and the physical and attitudinal barriers they face in their environment, with the aim of making cities more inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable (SDG 11).
To achieve true inclusion that allows for full personal development, it is urgent to accept diversity within the framework of fundamental equality. Therefore, a society that values inclusion must ensure respect for personal dignity and the full guarantee of individual rights. This implies setting aside labels, stigmas, and prejudices, and valuing what each person has to contribute. It is necessary to move beyond viewing individuals as subjects of protection to subjects of rights, promoting autonomy, work, and equal pay that enables inclusive and sustainable economic growth for all (SDG 8).
It thus calls for equal conditions and opportunities for all people to enable their full and effective participation in society, avoiding any kind of discrimination, including in educational, social, and economic security (SDG 10). It is an invitation to exercise humility and sensitivity in the face of the richness of diversity, as a challenge to the cultural values of today's society.
