ABOUT THE LABORATORY

The Laboratory of Immuno-Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism part of the Diabetes Research Institute (DRI)-Federation, a global collaborative initiative between different research centers that focuses on curing diabetes through the induction of immune tolerance, transplantation of islets and other insulin-producing cells, stem cell therapy and regenerative medicine strategies.

The laboratory studies the Diabetes Mellitus with an emphasis on elucidating and understanding the mechanisms responsible for triggering the onset of this disease and sustaining its chronic development. A thorough understanding of these processes provides the necessary foundation for developing more effective therapeutic strategies to prevent, mitigate, and/or cure this disease.

RESEARCH PROJECTS

Some of the projects currently under development are:

  • Endoplasmic reticulum stress in beta cells.
  • Beta-cell hormetic response.
  • Study of biological agents and small molecules with the potential to control inflammation in type 2 diabetes and/or induce immune tolerance in type 1 diabetes.
  • Strategies aimed at reducing beta-cell senescence as a potential therapy for diabetes.
