November 20th is World Children's Day, and the Observatory of Human Development and Vulnerability at the Institute of Family Sciences presented a report offering a worrying snapshot of the living conditions of children and adolescents in Argentina. The study, prepared by researchers María Sol González, Victoria Bein, and Lorena Bolzon, analyzes four key dimensions of child development: habitat, education, health, and protection from abuse.

Changes in demographic structures: A look at the Latin American reality

July 11th is World Population Day, which aims to draw attention to the urgency and importance of population issues and their relationship to the environment and development. This date was established by the Governing Council of the United Nations Development Programme in 1989. In Latin America, this date takes on particular relevance as it highlights the phenomenon of population aging. The region is experiencing an accelerated demographic transition, with declining birth rates and increasing life expectancy. Therefore, the Observatory of Human Development and Vulnerability at the Institute of Family Sciences, in conjunction with other university family institutes belonging to REDIFAM (Network of Latin American University Family Institutes), conducted this joint research as an opportunity for Latin American states, organizations, and all communities to work together in formulating inclusive public policies that place people and families at the center of development.

Family structures and social changes. A look at the Argentine reality

The UN states that "the family is the basic unit of society." In this context, the International Day of Families provides an opportunity to recognize, identify, and analyze social, economic, and demographic issues that affect its development and evolution. Therefore, this study, conducted by the Observatory of Human Development and Vulnerability, aims to highlight some of the structural changes that have occurred in Argentine families in recent years. In Latin America, this date takes on particular significance as it underscores the phenomenon of population aging. The region is experiencing an accelerated demographic transition, with declining birth rates and increasing life expectancy. Therefore, from the Observatory of Human Development and Vulnerability of the Institute of Sciences for the Family, together with other university family institutes belonging to REDIFAM (Network of Latin American University Institutes of Family), this joint research was carried out as an opportunity for Latin American states, organizations and all communities to work together in the formulation of inclusive public policies that put people and families at the center of development.

Women in the Argentine family context: Social and relational changes in the last 30 years

On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the International Year of Families and the founding of the Institute of Family Sciences of the Universidad AustralWe wanted to focus our attention on the family and its members, paying particular attention to the social and demographic changes that have occurred during this time. On this occasion, the Observatory of Human Development and Vulnerability has decided to address the role of women within the family context. Therefore, in the following study, we aim to highlight some of the changes that have taken place in our country over the last 30 years and evaluate how these have modified women's place within family structures and relationships. With this research, we intend to contribute to raising awareness about the important role women play in the Argentine family and social sphere. We also hope to contribute to Sustainable Development Goal 5 (SDG 5) by 2030, aiming for better living conditions for all family members.

What comprehensive education do students receive for their life project?

From the Observatory of Human Development and Vulnerability, we share this report that addresses comprehensive education, which, in the words of its author, "is oriented towards forming autonomous, committed, responsible people who can maintain healthy relationships…; free people, capable of reflective thinking, less easily influenced, and capable of making decisions. In this pedagogical style, the educator is the leader who leads, supports and guides in a transcendent service in the life of the young person."

Population growth and aging

On July 11, World Population Day, the Observatory of Human Development and Vulnerability published this report, which aims to reflect on the unprecedented challenges and major obstacles facing the world's population and that of Argentina. Since the International Conference on Population and Development held in Cairo in 1994, significant demographic changes with unprecedented social, economic, political, and cultural effects have continued to occur rapidly and relentlessly. Although the increase in life expectancy represents a great achievement for all of humanity, the result of this process—in which life is being extended and people are having fewer children—is population aging, an inevitable and growing phenomenon. This trend has accelerated in the last 20 years, showing that older adults are the fastest-growing population group.
