Vulnerability refers to the state of being physically or psychologically defenseless in the face of a threat, or to a lack or reduction of capacity to respond, protect oneself, or defend oneself. This concept of vulnerability allows us to intervene proactively and prevent potential risks. The empirical reasons for vulnerability arise from various inherent characteristics of the individual, such as age (childhood, old age), gender, or overall health (people with chronic illnesses or at the end of life, people with disabilities). However, vulnerability also stems from structural or circumstantial factors that may make a person more exposed, such as poverty, incarceration, or belonging to minority groups or having a lower educational or socioeconomic status, and who are therefore more likely to experience discriminatory treatment (indigenous peoples, religious groups, migrants, or other population groups). In this way, the perspective of the harm caused by the vulnerability of the subjects will allow the intervention to be planned for its prevention, treatment and, where appropriate, strengthening, promoting resilience.
This program aims to offer academic and professional training that fosters the development of the skills and abilities necessary to address diverse risk situations, with a focus on preventing personal and social harm. All of this is presented with the goal of preventing structural chronicity and facilitating an increase in quality of life and personal, family, and community well-being. As an original and innovative proposal in our country, and in response to a growing demand for training, this Master's program seeks to provide appropriate answers in different disciplinary areas, in a comprehensive manner. It aims to provide interdisciplinary training and intervention tools to professionals working in diverse social contexts, with a holistic view of vulnerability and its effects, and various possible intervention methods. This is its distinguishing feature compared to other programs offered at other universities in the region. In a world where problems and challenges are essentially urgent, as they involve human suffering, it is essential to foster the development of skills and competencies that allow for leading intervention projects with a solid humanistic, comprehensive, and social approach.
