The meeting highlighted the importance of considering the provincial and local dimension in Argentina's accession process to the OECD, emphasizing the role of cities and territories as key actors in sustainable development.
Francisco Resnicoff, Senior Fellow of the CIG, he noted in the introduction:
“In Argentina’s accession process to the OECD, this session is particularly relevant as it highlights the importance of provinces and cities in the development and growth agenda. The report 'OECD Regions and Cities at a Glance 2024'It highlights the need to look beyond national statistics and adopt an approach that analyzes provincial and local data in detail. This localized perspective allows for the design of more effective public policies adapted to different contexts. Furthermore, territorial inequalities are increasingly visible in income, employment, housing, climate change, and access to opportunities, which underscores the urgency of public policies that address these differences within the country.'
The Economist Marcos Díaz Ramírez, from the OECD Centre for Entrepreneurship, SMEs, Regions and Cities (CFE), shared the experiences and guidelines of the organization regarding territorial policies:
“The CFE helps local, regional and national governments to unleash the potential of entrepreneurs and small and medium-sized enterprises, promote inclusive and sustainable regions and cities, boost local job creation and implement sound tourism policies.”
During his presentation, he emphasized the importance of role of subnational policies in economic development, international best practices in territorial management and how Argentine regions and cities can to enhance their competitiveness and innovation within the framework of the country's accession process to the OECD.
