“Hope has a human face,” wrote Pope Francis in a recently published book for the Jubilee of Hope, which he inaugurated on December 24th with the opening of the Holy Door at St. Peter’s Basilica. Since then, hundreds of people have begun to file through the city of Rome with the desire to cross that same door. They are the so-called “pilgrims of hope,” and some are living embodiments of it. Such is the case of two Mexicans, Violeta and Jesús. On the last day of the year, during the Te Deum prayer with the Pope at St. Peter’s Basilica, it was hard to say what drew more attention: her effort to make her way through the crowd with his wheelchair , or their smiles.
