On June 20 and 21, as part of the celebration of Teacher's Day in El Salvador, Dr. Santiago Bellomo, Dean of the School of Education, was invited by the Alberto Masferrer Salvadoran University, USAM, to participate in the FOURTH MASFERRERIAN ACADEMIC CONGRESS: «EDUCATION WITH MENTAL HEALTH AND ETHICS» SUSTAINABLE".
With the aim of proposing a formative and intellectual space for specialists to meet and strengthen their experiences from their work within the institution, fostering an ethical perspective, Dr. Bellomo led the second stage of the agenda entitled: "University ethics: an understanding of being y to be in the future"
During her presentation, she pointed out that “the more capable AI is of replicating human skills, the greater the benefit for those who have already developed those skills. Conversely, the potential risks and harms are amplified for those with limited or no development of the skills involved.”
In short, “using generative AI in ‘pole vault mode’ allows people to advance further and faster in their personal development. However, using it in ‘crutch mode’ can lead to dependency by partially or completely replacing one’s own abilities. While AI has the potential to be a pole vault that propels our growth, the danger lies in using it as a crutch, hindering our own development. Educators must guide students to become aware of this risk and develop the intellectual capacity to use this powerful tool for their personal growth and flourishing,” concluded Dr. Bellomo.
