History of the Residence

The Orthopedics and Traumatology Residency Program originated in 2002 and has since established itself as a top-tier training program. Throughout its evolution, the service has been organized into subspecialties, keeping pace with the hospital's academic and clinical growth. To date, it has trained 37 orthopedic surgeons and traumatologists.

Accreditations

The Orthopedics and Traumatology Residency Program at the Austral University Hospital has the following accreditations and academic endorsements:

  • Ministry of Health of the Nation, as a residency training program.
  • CONEAU.
  • Accreditation by the Argentine Association of Orthopedics and Traumatology (AAOT).
  • University Title of Specialist in Orthopedics and Traumatology, awarded by the Universidad Austral.

 

Upon graduation, the university specialist degree will be awarded by the Universidad Austral because the residency program is accredited by CONEAU. A specialist degree from a CONEAU-accredited program is valid nationwide. Furthermore, the residency program is recognized by the National Ministry of Health, which allows graduates to obtain specialty certification from the Ministry.

The Residence in Numbers

  • Vacancies: 4 residents per year
  • Duration: 4 years

Monthly on-call shifts (average)

  • 1th year residents: 7 mandatory on-call shifts
  • 2th year residents: 5 mandatory on-call shifts
  • 3th year residents: 4 mandatory on-call shifts
  • 4th year residents: 2 mandatory on-call shifts

Extra shifts (from 3rd year): Possibility of performing additional paid shifts as staff doctors, including office and walk-in appointments.

Schedule and rest

  • Average entry time: 7:30 h (room pass)
  • Output: It is not fixed, it depends on each rotation
  • Post-guard: At noon
  • Vacation: 4 weeks per year

Academic activities

Internal Academic Activities

The internal academic program combines theory, practice, and scientific discussion, and is organized as follows:

  • Theoretical classes taught by the residents, twice a week, under the supervision of the Head of Service and Head of Residents.
  • Staff classes, taught by the heads and members of the service, covering topics of subspecialties and advanced procedures.
  • Classes in the Anatomy room, focused on understanding anatomy applied to orthopedic surgery.
  • Systematic discussion of scientific articles and critical analysis of the evidence.
  • General service athenaeums.
  • Multidisciplinary conferences and conferences specific to each subspecialty.
  • Morbidity-Mortality Athenaeum, for the reflective analysis of healthcare practice.
  • Development and publication of research papers, promoting the scientific training of residents.

External Academic Activities

  • Official courses organized by national scientific societies (SAMECIP, ACARO, SAOTI, AATD, AAA, SAPCV, etc).
  • Active participation in the AAOT Congress.

Free external rotations, which allow for expanding the training experience in reference centers.

The Orthopedics and Traumatology Residency at the Austral University Hospital has the mission of training highly competent specialists with a solid clinical, surgical and ethical foundation.

The program combines high-complexity care, subspecialty rotations, intensive academic activity, and comprehensive human development, ensuring that graduates can perform with excellence in any area of ​​orthopedics.

The graduate of the residency program will be qualified to:

  • Perform key surgical procedures in all subspecialties of orthopedics

  • A significant percentage continue at the Austral University Hospital or undertake national and international fellowships

The Orthopedics and Traumatology Service is structured by subspecialties, which allows for progressive and specific training in the different areas of the specialty, guaranteeing comprehensive and highly complex exposure throughout the residency.
