Residency Format

University Specialist Physician in Ophthalmology: upon graduation, the university specialist title will be awarded by the Universidad Austral because the residency program is accredited by CONEAU. A specialist degree from a CONEAU-accredited program is valid nationwide. Furthermore, the residency program is recognized by the National Ministry of Health, which allows graduates to obtain specialty certification from the Ministry.

The Ophthalmology Residency of Hospital Austral It provides comprehensive training with solid clinical and surgical experience within an excellent academic environment. Residents actively participate in patient care and surgery, research projects, and rotations through all subspecialties within ophthalmology. The program is distinguished by its personalized faculty support and access to state-of-the-art technology.

The Residence in Numbers

  • Number of current residents: 8
  • On-call shifts per month.

Between 2 and 6 shifts per month depending on the year of residency.

R3 and R4 free weekends

  • Post-shift rest: 9 am after the class period.
  • Average check-in/check-out times: Check-in 8am - Check-out 17pm
  • Number of internal and external rotations throughout the residency:

Residents rotate through all subspecialties at least twice during their four-year residency. These rotations include: Retina; Ocular Oncology; Oculoplastics, Orbit and Lacrimal System; Glaucoma; Cornea; Uveitis; Neuro-ophthalmology; Pediatric Ophthalmology-Strabismus; and Anterior Segment surgery throughout the residency.

  • International rotations: 4th year – 2 months duration
  • Weekly teaching hours: 5 hours per week
  • Vacation days per year: 4 weeks per year.
