History of the Residence

The Infectious Diseases Residency program began in 2021, and since then, one position has been available annually. It will have its first graduate in 2024.

Residency Format

Time: 3 years in the Making

Program type: Residence post-basicIt requires prior completion of residency in Internal Medicine or a related clinical specialty (e.g., Family Medicine or Intensive Care).

Title:  The residency program is recognized by the National Ministry of Health, which allows graduates to obtain specialty certification from the Ministry and has the academic endorsement of the Universidad Austral.

General description

Infectious diseases are a clinical specialty dedicated to the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of infectious diseases, both community-acquired and healthcare-associated. It is a cross-disciplinary field that constantly interacts with multiple clinical and surgical specialties, actively participating in the care of complex patients and in the multidisciplinary approach to various pathologies.

The Service's healthcare activity encompasses outpatient and inpatient care, in both clinical and surgical areas, including highly complex programs such as transplants and immunocompromised patients.

The Infectious Diseases Department offers a residency program with a healthy ratio of staff members to residents, allowing for close support throughout the training process. Residents carry out their clinical, academic, and teaching activities under continuous supervision, actively participating in clinical decision-making and interdisciplinary work with other hospital departments.

The Residence in Numbers

  • Number of residents: 1 per year (currently 3 residents in total).
  • Guards: Passives.
  • Schedule: 08:00 a 16:00 h.
  • Observership & hands-on training Internal rotations in bacteriology, infection control, pediatric infectious diseases and HIV: with the possibility of completing an extra elective national or international rotation.
  • Weekly teaching hours: Approximately 8 hours.
  • Holidays: 28 days per year.

    The service operates both on an outpatient and inpatient basis, providing care for patients with complex infections such as HIV/AIDS, sexually transmitted diseases, infections in transplant recipients and immunocompromised patients, critical infectious diseases, osteoarticular infections, and cardiovascular conditions. It also includes specialized areas such as travel medicine and immunizations.

    The department is actively involved in national and international academic activities, including regular presentations at infectious disease and clinical microbiology conferences. It also conducts clinical research and participates in multicenter studies, publishing in national and international scientific journals.

    The team works in an integrated manner with different hospital services and participates in collaborative research networks and multicenter study groups in infectious diseases.

    The members of the service are members of the Argentine Society of Infectology (SADI) and actively participate in its committees and academic activities.

The entire medical team of the Infectious Diseases Department actively participates in the training of residents as a teaching team and tutors.

Graduate Profile

The profile of the graduate of the Infectious Diseases residency will be that of a specialist physician with adequate humanistic, ethical, scientific and technical training, with the ability to solve the health problems presented, based on respect for diversity, taking into account the socioeconomic, cultural and epidemiological context, both in hospitalized patients and in outpatient care.

Furthermore, their training will enable them to integrate into healthcare teams by developing skills related to the surveillance, prevention, and control of infections in their various settings.

They will have adequate training in the epidemiology of healthcare-associated infections and diseases.

He will be able to diagnose and treat infectious diseases appropriately, both in outpatient settings and in patients requiring hospitalization.

You will have the appropriate knowledge to be able to design and implement policies for the responsible use of antimicrobials

You will have acquired knowledge that will allow you to optimize diagnostic resources and properly interpret the results of studies frequently used in infectious disease practice.

You will be able to present scientific papers in various settings (conferences, workshops, consensus statements, etc.) and/or publish them. Furthermore, you will be able to teach undergraduate and postgraduate courses on topics related to your specialization.
