History of the Residence

The Hematology Residency program was formally started in 2009, following a previous training phase through scholarships. fellowshipSince then, it has become a firmly established part of the service's commitment to academic training. To date, twelve residents have graduated and gone on to pursue professional careers in various subspecialties of hematology.

In 2017, the residency was accredited by the National Commission for University Evaluation and Accreditation (CONEAU), formally incorporating training in pediatric hematology within the program.

From 2025 onwards, the program was reformulated as a basic articulated residency, with two years of Internal Medicine and three specific years of Hematology, allowing the completion of training in the specialty in a shorter period.

Residency Format

Duration

  • Basic articulated residence of five (5) years duration, what includes two (2) years of basic training in Internal Medicine y three (3) years of specific training in Hematology (There is the possibility of direct entry into the structured Hematology program for physicians who have completed a residency in Internal Medicine (duly accredited).

Title obtained

  • Hematology Specialist

Upon graduation, the university specialist degree will be awarded by the Universidad Austral because the degree program associated with the residency has been accredited by CONEAU. The specialist title from a program accredited by CONEAU is valid nationwide.

Accreditations

  • Accredited residence National Commission for University Evaluation and Accreditation (CONEAU).
  • Certification awarded by the Argentine Society of Hematology

General description

The Hematology and Hematopoietic Transplant Service of the Austral University Hospital has the mission of providing comprehensive care to patients with hematological diseases, with professional and scientific excellence, considering the patient in their entirety and in connection with their family and social environment.

The service aims to consolidate itself as a center of reference in the Province of Buenos Aires and in the Argentine Republic, integrating in a balanced way the assistance, teaching and research activities, fundamental pillars of a university institution.

The vision is based on excellence as a result of interdisciplinary work, commitment to patients and the community, and care from the health team, promoting a collaborative work environment and spaces for reflection in the face of the high emotional burden inherent in the specialty.

In this context, the residency program has evolved towards comprehensive training in all areas of hematology, with a strong clinical, academic, and humanistic focus. The increasing complexity of the specialty and the development of highly complex subspecialties have driven the adaptation of the training program to a structured basic residency model.

The Residence in Numbers

  • Number of active residents:
  • On-call schedule: The residency program does not include active on-call shifts. Clinical activity includes Saturdays, according to the training stage, and passive on-call shifts.
  • Regular hours: 08:00 a 18:00 h.
  • Observership & hands-on training It includes mandatory rotations in Pediatrics and Transfusion Medicine.
  • Teaching activity: 4 weekly lecture hours.
  • Holidays: 4 weeks per year.

Why choose our Residence

  • Training in high complexity and high volume of care
The service has extensive experience in highly complex hematology. It is one of the most active Hematopoietic Transplant Units in the country, having performed over 1.600 transplants and averaging approximately 100 transplants annually. It also treats more than 60 new cases of leukemia, 100 lymphomas, and 50 myelomas each year.
The hemostasis and thrombosis area addresses highly complex pathology, including DVT/PE, cardiovascular surgery, liver transplantation, polytrauma and patients on ECMO.

  • multidisciplinary approach
The training is developed in close collaboration with multiple specialties, including Internal Medicine, Infectious Diseases, Coronary Care Unit, Intensive Care, Liver Surgery and other services, promoting a comprehensive view of the hematological patient.

  • Human, ethical and holistic development
The program promotes training centered on respect for the individual, their values, and beliefs, without compromising medical judgment. Bioethical principles and the doctor-patient relationship are central to the service's operations, incorporated from the beginning of the residency. Within this framework, specific activities such as narrative hematology workshops are developed.

  • Scientific and academic activity
The service maintains a sustained scientific activity, with local and multicenter research output, and an average of 4 to 5 publications annually in indexed journals over the last five years, especially in oncohematology and transplantation. Two doctoral programs have been developed within the residency program.
The training culminates in a final integrative project, consisting of an original research project with an oral defense, which in several cases has led to scientific publications. Dr. G. Kusminsky, a consultant in the department, received the Konex Award in Internal Medicine in 2023.

  • Collaborative work environment and institutional integration
The members of the service actively participate in subcommittees of the Argentine Society of Hematology (Acute Leukemias, Lymphomas, Plasma Cell Dyscrasias, Transplantation and Hemostasis/Thrombosis), as well as in the Argentine Society of Narrative Medicine, promoting a climate of collaborative work and permanent academic exchange.

  • Links with scientific societies
The service maintains close collaboration with the Argentine Society of Hematology, the Argentine Group for Bone Marrow Transplantation and Cell Therapies, and the Argentine Society of Narrative Medicine. Its members have held and continue to hold leadership roles in these institutions, strengthening the program's academic and scientific standing.

Life in the Residence

The service's vision is geared towards considering excellence as the result of interdisciplinary work, through harmonious operation, and dedication to patients and the community. In the care of hematological patients, close teamwork is essential. This close collaboration requires a special commitment to cultivating a spirit of cordiality, creating spaces for reflection, and ensuring the appropriate management of the psychological and emotional burden on all members of the service, especially given the challenge of caring for serious and potentially life-threatening illnesses.
