History of the Residence

The Pediatric Emergency Residency began its activities in 2021, in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, incorporating its first resident that year.

Since its inception, the program has graduated one resident and currently has two residents in training. Despite its recent implementation, the residency has shown sustained development, with academic presentations at national and international conferences, reflecting an early commitment to scientific activity and academic training.

The Post-Basic Residency in Pediatric Emergency Medicine is offered at the Austral University Hospital, with a mission aligned with the institution's values, focused on providing safe, high-quality care, placing the pediatric patient and their family at the center of care. The program offers systematic, evidence-based training that integrates clinical practice, teaching, and research, with a humanized approach.

The residency program takes place at a high-complexity university hospital, providing rigorous training in the initial management of pediatric patients with common and complex acute conditions, including transplants, oncology, neurological disorders, and complex surgery. This environment fosters the development of core values ​​such as professionalism, commitment, teamwork, and respect for life and human dignity.

Graduate Profile

Upon completion of the residency, graduates will possess the necessary competencies for the initial care, ongoing assessment, and comprehensive management of pediatric patients in the emergency setting, applying evidence-based practices. They will be trained in the diagnosis and acute treatment of complex patients, including chronic, premature, transplant, and disabled patients, as well as in the prescription, execution, and evaluation of diagnostic, therapeutic, and monitoring procedures, recognizing their indications, contraindications, and potential complications. They will develop skills for interdisciplinary work and for improving care processes and outcomes, incorporating management, quality, and patient safety tools, with appropriate use of hospital resources and technology. Furthermore, they will acquire knowledge in work organization and healthcare system management, and will strengthen their medical professionalism, based on altruism, respect, integrity, empathy, effective communication, shared decision-making, and a commitment to excellence and continuous professional development. The training is complemented by the development of teaching skills, through traditional methods and clinical simulation, and by research training, including project design, data collection and analysis, promoting a reflective and academically sound practice.

Academic activities

Mandatory activities

  • Participation in seminars of the Department of Child Medicine (DMI).
  • Internal bibliographical forum, held every two weeks.
  • Classes corresponding to the theoretical program of the scholarship, with a weekly frequency.
  • Teaching activity aimed at Pediatric residents and residents in lower years.
  • Participation in projects of ATP (process improvement), funded by the Emergency Department.
  • Course Investigation methodology.
  • Presentation of at least one scientific work at conferences or workshops in the field.
  • Development of clinical skills in the field of simulation.

Optional activities

  • Realization of PFCCS Course (Pediatric Fundamental Critical Care Support).
  • Refresher course in Emergency Medicine (second year), Garrahan Hospital (virtual modality).

Life in the Residence

The residency program includes daily attendance, post-call rest, and 12-hour weekend shifts, always with constant supervision from pediatric specialists. Residents interact continuously with pediatric subspecialties at a high-complexity center, integrating clinical practice with university teaching and research.

The training includes structured classes and ongoing education during daily practice, as well as participation in conferences, courses, and academic activities of the department and the Emergency and Critical Care Committee of the SAP (Argentine Society of Pediatrics). From the outset, the resident is integrated into the department staff, in an excellent work environment, with opportunities for professional development and employment upon completion of the residency, within a university hospital committed to innovation, teaching, and compassionate care.
