History of the Residence

The Diagnostic Imaging Residency program began its activities in the year 2008.

Since its inception, the program has formed 46 specialists until the year 2025consolidating itself as a leading residency in the training of physicians in diagnostic imaging.

Upon graduation, the university specialist degree will be awarded by the Universidad Austral because the residency program is accredited by CONEAU. A specialist degree from a CONEAU-accredited program is valid nationwide. Furthermore, the residency program is recognized by the National Ministry of Health, which allows graduates to obtain specialty certification from the Ministry.

General description

The Diagnostic Imaging Residency program aims to train specialist physicians with comprehensive preparation focused on quality care, patient safety, and teamwork. The training model is progressive and supervised, promoting active learning, increasing responsibility, and clinical-radiological correlation, along with effective communication with healthcare teams.

The Diagnostic Imaging Department at Austral University Hospital offers a demanding training environment, with a high volume of studies and a wide variety of pathologies, and access to computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, ultrasound, and highly complex interventional radiology. Residents join a team with a strong commitment to teaching, receiving continuous supervision and feedback, which fosters diagnostic reasoning and responsible professional autonomy.

Graduate Profile

Graduates of the Diagnostic Imaging Residency program will be trained to select, order, and appropriately utilize various diagnostic methods according to the patient's clinical context. They will understand the physical principles of each modality and operate equipment according to criteria of quality, safety, and efficient resource use. They will be able to systematically analyze imaging studies, integrate findings, and formulate differential diagnoses, as well as clear and clinically relevant reports that facilitate medical decision-making. Furthermore, they will apply principles of radiation protection and biosafety, participate in continuous quality improvement processes, communicate effectively with patients and healthcare teams, and practice with an ethical, humanistic, and evidence-based approach, demonstrating a commitment to teaching, research, and efficient service management..

Labor insertion:

The residency program boasts a high job placement rate. Historically, graduates have had the opportunity to join the professional team at Austral University Hospital. In the most recent cohort, four out of five graduating residents continue to work at the institution.

Those who do not remain in the hospital are currently working in various health centers, both public and private, in different provinces of the country, which reflects the solid training received and the wide job opportunities in the specialty.

Life in the Residence

The atmosphere of the residency program is one of its greatest strengths. It is a diverse group, comprised of residents from various provinces across the country and from abroad, with varied backgrounds and experiences, united by a shared interest in learning, growing, and teaching. Camaraderie, respect, and constant support prevail, both academically and personally. The intense daily activity and the many hours spent together at the hospital strengthen bonds and foster a strong sense of belonging, making specialist training a demanding process, but also profoundly enriching and enjoyable.
