The Internal Medicine Residency Program at Austral University Hospital enrolled its first residents in 2002. Since then, the program has trained a total of 86 specialists.

Throughout its history, the residency program has shown steady growth, increasing from an initial intake of 3 residents per year to its current cohort of 16. This growth has involved expanding both training activities and internal and external rotations, strengthening clinical experience and learning opportunities. Graduates have developed a versatile profile that allows them to work both within the hospital and nationally and internationally, combining a strong commitment to clinical practice with skills in management and research.

Qualifications obtained:

Upon graduation, the university specialist degree will be awarded by the Universidad Austral because the residency program is accredited by CONEAU. A specialist degree from a CONEAU-accredited program is valid nationwide. Furthermore, the residency program is recognized by the National Ministry of Health, which allows graduates to obtain specialty certification from the Ministry.

Mission and training approach

The Internal Medicine Residency program aims to train physicians with a strong clinical foundation, capable of providing comprehensive, high-quality care to both inpatients—with prevalent and complex pathologies—and outpatients. The program combines a strong clinical focus with research training, promoting participation in projects and the development of protocols upon completion of the residency. It also includes rotations through critical care areas and various clinical specialties, fostering a multidisciplinary approach to patient care.

General service profile

The Internal Medicine Department is characterized by teamwork and comprehensive, progressive training throughout the residency. There is close integration between residents and staff, actively supporting clinical, academic, and interpersonal development, and promoting shared decision-making. Daily collaboration with other specialties fosters an interdisciplinary approach that enables comprehensive, high-quality care.

• R1: 7 guards
• R2: 6 guards

Regular hours:

• Entry: 07:30 a.m.
• Discharge: approximately 17:00 PM, with the possibility of early termination depending on the care dynamics

Observership & hands-on training
 The rotations are carried out entirely within the Austral University Hospital, a high-complexity center with a wide range of specialties.

• R1: without rotations
• R2: UCO, UCI and Anesthesia
• R3: Emergency Department, Infectious Diseases, Outpatient Clinics and Diagnostic Imaging
• R4: Dermatology, Clinics, Research Methodology and 2 months of elective rotation

International rotations:

• In the fourth year, there is the possibility of completing an elective rotation abroad.
• It includes 2 months dedicated to research and 2 months of elective rotation.

Teaching activity:

• 8 hours of academic activities per week
• It includes clinical case conferences (hospital central, service and office), simulation workshops, introductory classes and advanced specialist course
• Academic review activities during patient rounds

Holidays:

• 4 weeks per year

In recent years, approximately 36% of graduates have continued their professional development within the Internal Medicine Department of Austral University Hospital.
