History of the Residence

The General Surgery Residency Program at Austral University Hospital began in 2003, making it one of the institution's first residency programs, along with Pediatrics. The program's first resident was Dr. Eduardo Beccar Varela, who currently works as a surgeon on staff in the Breast Surgery Department at Austral University Hospital. To date, the residency program has trained a total of 48 specialists.

Residency Format

Duration:

  • 4 years
  • Basic residency with progressive training in General Surgery
  • Active duty shifts and increasing participation in medium and high complexity procedures

Title obtained:

Upon graduation, the university specialist degree will be awarded by the Universidad Austral because the residency program is accredited by CONEAU. A specialist degree from a CONEAU-accredited program is valid nationwide. Furthermore, the residency program is recognized by the National Ministry of Health, which allows graduates to obtain specialty certification from the Ministry.

  • CONEAU: Accredited program, with a postgraduate university degree valid nationwide.
  • Ministry of Health: Accredited residency in accordance with official standards for the training of specialists.
  • Universidad Austral: University degree awarded and academically endorsed, integrating clinical practice and academic training.
  • Argentine Association of Surgery (AAC): Academic endorsement that positions the program within national standards of excellence and facilitates articulation with international surgical societies, including the American College of Surgeons.

General description

The General Surgery Residency Program at Austral University Hospital is dedicated to training general surgeons with a comprehensive, patient-centered approach focused on safety, quality of care, and academic excellence. Clinical and surgical training is conducted under the continuous mentorship of accredited surgeons, ensuring progressive, responsible, and supervised learning. The program takes place within a high-complexity service, integrating clinical practice with academic training and fostering a humanistic, ethical, and committed approach to comprehensive patient care.

Residence in Numbers

Total length:

  • 4 years

Current residents:

  • 5 fourth-year residents (R1)
  • 5 fourth-year residents (R2)
  • 5 fourth-year residents (R3)
  • 3 fourth-year residents (R4)
  • 1 Chief Resident

Surgical volume:

  • Approximately 3.000 surgeries per year
  • Main areas: esophagogastroduodenal surgery, biliary tract and pancreas, coloproctology and abdominal wall
  • Active participation in bariatric surgery, thoracic surgery, lung transplantation, head and neck surgery, peripheral vascular surgery, ablations and liver transplant bench surgery

Guards:

  • R1: average of 7 to 8 shifts per month (includes weekends)
  • R2: average of 6 to 7 shifts per month (includes weekends)
  • R3: average of 5 monthly guard shifts
  • R4: 1 weekly shift

Post-guard rest: Yes, guaranteed from noon onwards

 

Regular hours:

  • Entry: 07:30 a.m. (room pass)
  • Exit:
    • 16:00 PM on days without assigned surgical activity
    • Variable schedule on days with surgery
  • Surgical activity from Monday to Saturday, with surgeries scheduled in the morning and afternoon on weekdays

Observership & hands-on training
 All rotations take place within the Austral University Hospital, guaranteeing continuity of training, direct supervision and full integration into each surgical team.

  • R1:
    • Without external rotations
  • R2:
    • 1 month in Breast Surgery
    • 1 month in Intensive Care (active role as an ICU resident)
  • R3:
    • 6 weeks in Head and Neck Surgery
    • 2 months in Bariatric Surgery
    • 2 months in Thoracic Surgery
  • R4:
    • 2 months in Liver Surgery and Liver Transplantation
    • 1 month in Trauma Surgery (national or international rotation through institutional agreements)
    • 2 months of elective rotation in HUA services or in national or international institutions

Teaching

  • Protected classes: 1 hour per week (Thursdays), taught by the service staff.
  • Tumor Committee: 1 hour per week (Wednesdays).
  • General service pass: 2 hours per week, with academic discussions about complex patients

  • Thoracic Surgery: 2 hours
  • Liver Surgery and Liver Transplantation: 2 hours
  • Head and Neck Surgery: 2 hours

 

Holiday Courses

Collaboration with scientific societies: The program is endorsed by the Argentine Association of Surgery, guaranteeing national training standards and facilitating the academic and professional development of the resident.

Service Organization

The General Surgery Service at Austral University Hospital is organized in a hierarchical and functional structure that allows it to provide care to High complexity, while also promoting the progressive training of the resident and interdisciplinary work.

The service has a Service Headquarters, responsible for clinical, academic and training management, and includes the following subsectors specific to General Surgery:

  • Esophagogastroduodenal surgery
  • Abdominal Wall Surgery
  • Biliopancreatic surgery, renopause transplantation, and spleen surgery

 

  • Colorectal Surgery

Within this structure, residents participate in a active and progressive in clinical and surgical care, integrating into specialized teams with direct supervision and increasing responsibility in decision-making.

The General Surgery Department also actively participates in procedures corresponding to other surgical specialties, particularly in Bariatric surgery, Thoracic surgery y Head and neck surgery, both in joint surgeries and during the specific rotations of the different years of residency.

Graduates of the General Surgery Residency Program at Austral University Hospital possess solid competencies for the autonomous and responsible practice of the specialty, excelling in:

  • Comprehensive assessment and decision-making in elective, emergency, and high-complexity surgical patients.
  • Advanced management of laparoscopic surgery, with active participation in medium and high complexity procedures.
  • Training in basic digestive endoscopy as a complementary diagnostic and therapeutic tool.
