Since its inception, the program has formed three specialistsconsolidating itself as a training proposal oriented towards surgical specialization and the approach to highly complex thoracic pathology.
The Thoracic Surgery Service has a long history and a solid training school that originated at the British Hospital of Buenos Aires in the late 1980s. Throughout its history, the service has consolidated a training model of excellence, based on the transmission of knowledge, surgical skills and clinical experience.
The mission of the residence is to offer a harmonious and stimulating training environment, oriented towards the development of not only technical and academic talents, but also human ones, promoting moral values in teamwork and ethical principles in individual professional practice.

High volume and complexity in thoracic pathology
The main focus of the service is high complexity thoracic oncological pathologywith special emphasis on the diagnosis and staging of lung cancerThis ensures an adequate volume for comprehensive training in this area. Infectious, mediastinal, and traumatic pathologies are also addressed, and less frequently, thoracic malformations and functional disorders such as hyperhidrosis. The service has developed specific areas for the treatment of thoracic outlet syndrome, in conjunction with hemodynamics and coagulation, and for the management of complex airway pathologyThere is also close collaboration with General Surgery for the treatment of esophageal lesions.
multidisciplinary approach
The coordinated work with the services of Internal Medicine, General Surgery, Pulmonology, Oncology, Nuclear Medicine and Diagnostic Imaging allows for a comprehensive approach to the complex patient, with consensual and collaborative decisions, especially in highly complex scenarios.
Human, ethical and holistic development
The residency program fosters an environment of respect, cordiality, and teamwork, valuing diverse opinions and academic exchange. Training is grounded in ethical, professional, and humanistic principles, encouraging evidence-based decision-making, medical experience, and professional maturity, with a strong institutional identity and continuity in clinical practice guidelines.
Scientific and academic activity
Active participation in scientific activities is encouraged, including the presentation of papers at national and international congresses, such as the Argentine Congress of Surgery, the Autumn Surgery Conference, the Congress of the European Society of Thoracic Surgery, and activities of the Argentine Society of Thoracic Surgery. Participation in the HUA Annual Lung Cancer Workshopthoracic surgery courses, and training in innovative tools such as the surgical planning with 3D reconstruction.
Collaborative work environment
The department boasts a vibrant internal academic program, including departmental meetings, interdisciplinary case conferences, pulmonology case conferences, surgical morbidity and mortality conferences, and oncology committees. Integration with other hospitals and scientific societies is encouraged, strengthening academic and professional exchange.
Links with scientific societies
