History of the Residence

The Dermatology Residency program began in 2005. Since then, it has trained 21 dermatologists, who currently work in different areas of clinical practice.

Throughout its history, the program has established itself as a solid training proposal, with a clinical and academic focus, adapted to the advances in the specialty and to interdisciplinary work.

Titles obtained

Upon graduation, the university specialist degree will be awarded by the Universidad Austral because the residency program is accredited by CONEAU. A specialist degree from a CONEAU-accredited program is valid nationwide. Furthermore, the residency program is recognized by the National Ministry of Health, which allows graduates to obtain specialty certification from the Ministry.

General description

The Dermatology Residency at the Austral University Hospital has the mission of training dermatologists with a solid clinical, surgical and academic foundation, capable of the comprehensive approach to prevalent and highly complex dermatological pathologies.

The program is implemented at a leading university hospital, with specialized centers such as the Skin Cancer Center and the Immune-Mediated Dermatoses Center, and a high volume of patients. Emphasis is placed on early detection, multidisciplinary teamwork, and evidence-based medicine.

The residency program integrates training in adult and pediatric dermatology, continuous supervision, and active participation in clinical research, and is articulated with the Universidad Australallowing for structured academic training and the attainment of a double specialist degree.

  • Cosmetic and corrective surgery – Bermel Clinics: 2 months
  • Elective rotation: 3 months

International rotations

Teaching activity

  • 7 hours per week of academic activities

    The residency program takes place in a highly complex university hospital with a high volume of outpatient and inpatient care. Specializations include complex dermatological diseases, dermatological oncology, and immune-mediated, infectious, and inflammatory dermatoses. Furthermore, our team includes both adult and pediatric dermatology specialists, broadening the scope and complexity of the resident's training. In addition to clinical and pathological care, numerous dermatological surgical procedures are performed.

    The residency program promotes patient-centered training, with an emphasis on medical ethics, communication, professionalism, and teamwork. It encourages the progressive development of medical autonomy within a framework of supervision and mentorship.

    The residency program maintains a strong scientific presence, regularly presenting research at national and international dermatology and related field conferences. In recent years, clinical and epidemiological research projects have been developed, resulting in publications in national and international dermatology journals, thus fostering academic training and critical thinking.

    The service is characterized by a collaborative and educational work environment, with constant interaction between residents, attending physicians, and other areas of the hospital. Participation in joint projects with other departments and, when appropriate, with external academic institutions is encouraged.

 

  • Collaboration with scientific societies
    The residency is actively linked with national (SAD) and international (EADV, AAD, CILAD) dermatological scientific societies, facilitating participation in academic activities, refresher courses and congresses, and promoting the early integration of the resident into the scientific community.

Graduate Profile

Graduates of the Dermatology Residency Program at Austral University Hospital are specialist physicians trained in the evaluation, diagnosis, and comprehensive treatment of major dermatological conditions in adults and children, including inflammatory, infectious, oncological, autoimmune, and genetic diseases. They are proficient in clinical and digital dermatoscopy, early diagnosis of skin cancer, comprehensive management of melanoma in its initial stages, and the administration of biological treatments for immune-mediated diseases and genodermatoses.

He has a solid foundation in basic dermatological and surgical procedures, including skin biopsies (punch, incisional, and excisional), excision of benign and malignant lesions, simple and complex suturing, cryosurgery, electrocoagulation, galvanocautery, infiltrations, and the management of topical, systemic, and biological therapies. He is trained in the longitudinal follow-up of chronic patients, the evaluation of therapeutic response using validated scales (PASI, DLQI, among others), and interdisciplinary work, acting with ethical judgment, progressive autonomy, and appropriate supervision.

job placement

Of the 21 graduates, 20 stayed at the institution. Later, the following emigrated:

  • 1 to Switzerland
  • 1 to USA
  • 1 to Chile
  • 1 to Spain
  • And one doctor returned to her home province (Tucumán).
