The relationship between prosperity and access to public information

Academic/Unit: Ignacio Bouilin Victoria.

Amartya Sen, Nobel Prize winner in Economics in 1998, argued in his work Development as Freedom that the various freedoms are intertwined. For this reason, freedom of expression contributes to economic development. Moreover, Sen demonstrated that no country with a true democracy and freedom of expression has suffered famine. Open social debate, by enabling criticism and dissent, makes it possible to hold leaders accountable at the ballot box for poor decisions and allows society to move toward prosperity.
