The Research Master Class paid tribute to the renowned researcher of the Faculty of Biomedical Sciences, who shared an intimate and scientific journey through his vast career, marked by discoveries, formative links and an unwavering commitment to the academic community.

La Universidad Austral The Faculty of Biomedical Sciences (FCB) held another edition of its Research Master Class, an event created to recognize the work of faculty researchers with outstanding careers. This year, the distinction was awarded to Dr. Ángela Suburo, professor and researcher at the FCB, who shared a deeply personal and scientific presentation entitled “The great adventure”.

The gathering, held on December 1st in the FCB Amphitheater, brought together authorities, faculty, students, and research teams who joined Dr. Suburo in a deeply moving moment. Her account, filled with memories, discoveries, and expressions of gratitude, touched all those present and highlighted the humility and dedication that characterized her career.

A life dedicated to science

During her presentation, Dr. Suburo traced more than five decades of work in neuroscience, from her early years at the Faculty of Medicine of the UBA to her arrival at the Universidad Austral.

“I tried to cover 30 years in 30 minutes. I chose to call it 'The great adventure' "Because that's how I've always felt about the research journey: a challenge that mixes effort, curiosity, and a lot of gratitude," he told the audience.

He reminded his teachers of the importance of the "family tree" of science, and the milestones that marked his path: his studies on the retina, the international networks he strengthened, and the training of more than twenty scholarship recipients who continue to research in the country and abroad.

The emotion was especially visible when she mentioned the first people who believed in her, the colleagues with whom she shared the laboratory, and her students: “This path would have no meaning without those who dared to walk it alongside me. Science is an essentially collective and human endeavor, even in its most complex moments,” she stated.

The value of recognizing trajectories

Taking the floor, Rector Julián Rodríguez emphasized the value that the Universidad Austral He assigned a role to research and to those who promote it. “The master classes were created to highlight the importance of research at our university. We are interested in making that commitment explicit and publicly recognizing those who rigorously and consistently uphold the scientific endeavor,” he stated.

For his part, the Vice-Rector for Research, Dr. Juan Bautista Etcheverry, shared a reflection from the jury that evaluated the nominations and emphasized the institutional impact of the recognition. “The external evaluators were pleasantly surprised: they had not seen this type of recognition, focused on highlighting established scientific careers, at other institutions. They agreed on the exceptional quality of Ángela's profile,” he noted.

Etcheverry also reviewed the strategic axes that guide the work of the Vice-Rectorate: “We want to strengthen the training of human resources, improve the conditions for researchers to unleash their full potential and guide research towards priority lines that accompany institutional growth.”

The meeting concluded with remarks from the Dean of the Faculty of Biological Sciences (FCB), Dr. Guillermo Mazzolini, who highlighted Dr. Suburo's presence and ongoing contributions to the academic community. He emphasized that "it is part of the Faculty's distinctive character to have professors of this caliber, with remarkable scientific output and a constant commitment to education and institutional work. Every request, every committee, every project always found a generous and proactive response from Ángela," he stated.

The award given to Dr. Ángela Suburo not only highlighted her academic career, but also her way of experiencing science: with passion, humility and a deep vocation for training others.
