From the 'master class' to the 'social cocktail party'

Over fifty years ago, communication theory grasped the essence of real, effective communication. In a brilliant passage (which I repeat whenever possible because I find it so illuminating), the American anthropologist Ray Birdwhistell defined communication as a process of joint participation. He said, “An individual does not communicate. He participates in communication or becomes part of it.” It really took me a long time to realize the conceptual significance of this passage.
