Institute for Translational Medicine Research (IIMT)

A translational orientation of research

Translational Medicine research has become a new paradigm and challenge, aiming to bridge the gap between basic and clinical research.

Over the past decade, multiple academic centers, foundations, governments, organizations, and health systems have prioritized Translational Medicine, which is also used as a guide for health decision-making.

The Academic Health Center of the Universidad AustralThe complex, comprised of the Faculty of Biomedical Sciences, the Austral University Hospital, and the Health Plan, provides an ideal location for the Institute's operations. Research is considered central to both the Faculty of Biomedical Sciences and the Austral University Hospital, and the interrelationship between its constituent parts is even more important.

Our vision is that, guided by its Mission, over the next 10 years, the interaction between the possibilities offered by the Faculty for research with the Hospital will lay the foundations for the execution of lines of research aimed at obtaining concrete results that will allow the improvement of the health of the population in specific medical projects.

The Institute will seek to: a) help provide the means to cover the needs that researchers have to carry out their research projects; b) stimulate new and innovative ways of using technology for the benefit of patients linked to the studies or those patients who are potential beneficiaries of the studies underway; c) develop interaction strategies between basic researchers and clinical physicians within the Austral University Hospital, but also in other health institutions when the studies require it; d) support basic biotechnological research as an essential pillar for the progress of translational research; and e) promote the dissemination of this form of research to society so that awareness is raised of the value of translational research and to stimulate societal commitment to supporting research.

Among the achievements to be attained are: a) increasing knowledge of the changing needs in a constantly evolving field of medicine; b) responding to the demands of society in priority population pathologies for which the Institute has the appropriately trained personnel; c) committing to growth in areas that CONICET considers strategic for the development of health in the area of influence of the Academic Health Center of the Universidad Austral (yd) stimulate technological development that leads to new diagnostic and therapeutic procedures at the lowest possible cost to the health system.

  1. To contribute to the advancement of the understanding of the causes and mechanisms of pathologies that affect human beings and to promote the development of therapies that mitigate or definitively cure them.
  2. To provide a space for scientists from different areas of knowledge to interact with health personnel from different specialties, facilitating the integration of research at all levels of the physical-chemical-biological organization, promoting lines of translational research and the application of new basic knowledge to develop original treatments and/or improve existing treatments and cures.
  3. To promote research projects that involve the training of fellows, doctoral students, and young researchers focused on topics with applied medical applications. This will include undergraduate students, graduates dedicated full-time to research, resident physicians with part-time research commitments (residency/doctoral programs), and scientists at all stages of their careers.
